My experience with Universal Accounting Marketing Program was stimulating, revealing and most of all educational.

My coach Rick Howard from the offset guided me from being very doubtful to being confident and believing that I have all the qualities to pursue my dream, which is to be a business owner.

When the sessions started I was filled with apprehension and self doubt. Rick explained to me that once I set my goals and follow through, the journey would not be as difficult as I once perceived. He was so right, I now want to tell everyone that I meet about my business. I feel more open and ready to take on more challenges.

Hey Rick,

Here are some thoughts to address your talking points:

1) I was having a problem finding the first couple of clients and how the best way was to break the ice.

2) Having been in sales for many years, it was a good experience to revisit several ways to market my services. I think the coaching helped remind me there is more than one way to do things and helped me get out of the rut I was in.

3) The coaching sessions actually changed my goals that I had set. I originally was so frustrated about getting my first client that I had set me goals much too low. During the coaching sessions, I got three clients to sign up and consequently I needed to raise my goals to be more of a challenge.

4) My confidence has always been high. I believe in myself and my abilities. I think the coaching sessions made me realize this fact and that I also have confidence in the product and what I can do for a client.

5) During the sessions, I used several ways of marketing my services including letters to friends and local businesses, the local Chamber of Commerce, joined a BNI group (this was probably the best thing that I did) and I talk to everyone I come in contact with about how I can help them reduce their taxes, increase their profits and better manage their cash flow.

6) I have set-up three clients who I will do everyday accounting, consulting and taxes for. I just got back my first Business Assessment and am extremely pleased with the information within the reports and how it can sustain relationships with clients.

7) I think that informational discussions, new ideas, homework and anything of substance to the coaching session should be written and sent to the person being coached so that it can be used as a study for future use as well as making sure that they get an accurate depiction of what transpired in the session.

8) It was a good reminder of how to’s, variations on existing ways of doing things and a great reminder of the difference between marketing and sales.

I hope these answers will help in tweaking or fine tuning points in the coaching sessions. They are my opinions and I believe I got my money’s worth out of the sessions.

When you told me that I was in the elite few, that made me feel SO proud and excited about the whole process.

After teaching for fifteen years, and after taking an income tax preparation course and working through tax season this past year, I began heavily investigating Universal Accounting’s program. I had majored in economics in college with an emphasis in accounting. I was a treasurer for several organizations, was a manager at a McDonald’s, and did bank audit work for a couple of summers about 15 years ago. I was looking at my chiropractor’s bulletin board where his clients leave business cards. I noticed there was no accounting professional listed. Noticing that out loud, the massage therapist who works there asked me what I was talking about. I explained to her how I was thinking about starting my own accounting/bookkeeping/tax preparation business. She urged me to do so—because her husband needed someone to do his back taxes.

Making the decision to go through with it, I contacted Universal Accounting about their program. I purchased the package and anxiously awaited for the time when the package would arrive. While I was zooming through the course, I realized that I COULD do this.

After taking the course, I spent the remainder of my summer vacation preparing the forms, buying business cards, and letting the marketing get rolling. I also took an on-line Notary Public course. In Florida, we have access to a website that informs us publicly of new businesses that are starting up as their articles or fictitious licenses are filed with the State. I began accessing the website weekly, using the information to send out a welcome letter and business cards.

In two weeks time, I received a call from a new business owner. He and his wife were going to start a paving business, but their mother was going to do the bookkeeping. They asked me to set up the chart of accounts, advise them of a software package to use, and go over the accounting with their mother. She felt uncomfortable because she has done church accounting for 15 years, but did not know where to get started with a business. So, I have become a consultant to this company, and I go in quarterly to check her work.

Still sending out letters and business cards, one of my potential clients gave my business card to a friend who needed to find a new bookkeeper. I landed my BIG client. I am doing weekly payroll for about 50 employees in addition to setting up his books from scratch. His former bookkeeper—who supposedly had 20 years of bookkeeping experience—was putting funds into wrong accounts, not reconciling the accounts, and was giving him balance sheets with negative checking account balances that kept getting out of hand. We talked about what I could do for him. After working the numbers, he agreed to my price and I am off. If I get three more clients of his magnitude, I could quit my current job and “be my own boss” earning the same amount of money and working 5 hours a month per client.

My third current client is also done on a contractual, as-needed basis. One of my colleagues’ mother is a principal who is working on her doctoral dissertation. She needed someone who could do some “computer work” for her. So, I am doing some document preparation and data analysis. Although not technically accounting work, my advertising has led me to another client who is assisting in supplementing my income.

I am taking additional tax preparation classes so that I can assist my clients in preparing their personal and corporate income taxes come January. In that, I am generating some additional income by offering to prepare taxes.

So, in summary, after taking your course, I got some additional accounting information, I got some great marketing techniques, and I have gotten three clients in two months time will result in $10,000 per year of extra income that I did not have before I bought your training program.

For 14 years, Amy Rines worked as a comptroller for three different construction companies and saw the same thing happen each time; once she came in, and trained people on procedures, she was no longer needed full time. So, as she was faced again with switching roles within her company, she began to wonder how many other companies might need just a part-time accountant.

Soon after that Rines Management was born. Despite already having an accounting background, Rines turned to the Universal Accounting.

Richard Klabunde had tried launching his own practice five times with no luck. Following each unsuccessful attempt, he went to work fulltime for another company. But when he found himself out of work at 55 years old, he knew it was time to try something different.

As for the work Richard does, he loves helping individuals and small businesses succeed. He stands behind his work and talks to clients in such a way that they always feel respected. They’re also confident that there’s no problem with which Richard can’t help them.

When asked the key to his success, Richard says, “Just lucky—at least, that is what it looks like. Or it could be having the right office, having the right contacts, finding the right clients, getting referrals from everywhere, the right business card, a sign that can be seen two blocks away, and being a nice guy. Of course, some might say I have a good marketing program.”

And to those who may be considering Universal training, Richard says that unless you know more about starting and growing a practice, you should give Universal a try. “If you do,” he says, “the work you do will be successful.”

Things are going great!  Not sure if I let you know, but I was able to quit my job last November (has it been that long since we touched base?  not sure….)  Anyway, my tax practice is in full swing and my referral business is growing rapidly!  It really is true, after you get a few clients, the referrals start popping up, and I am at the point now where my basic living and business expenses are covered – YEAH!!!  And business is growing, I have taken on 3 new ongoing bookkeeping clients in the past 2 weeks, with one more probable coming up.  And one or two tax clients per week also, so I am a busy girl!
I have completed the training on the tax program, quickbooks and most of the bookkeeping (I am a degreed accountant, so most of that is review, but very helpful and explained in a way they NEVER do in college!); but have not yet taken the certification tests (will have to wait until after tax season!)
 
I am very excited about the growth of my business and very thankful to UAC for the help and support I get when I need it.  And, I haven’t even cracked open the UPB yet – so I am sure I will be back to making what I was in the corporate world (and then some!) soon :-)  Just one question on that – the UPB program, I purchased it last year at the UAC conference in Sept, but have not utilized the support, will that automatically expire in Sept this year, or 1 year after I start using it?  Just curious.

In November of last year, Angel Vincent quit her day job. She was a manager of finance with a major non-profit health organization, and was doing well. The problem? The higher she climbed the corporate ladder, the more unbalanced her life became. It seemed ironic that the better her career, the more hours was dedicating to it; she found herself with little time for herself and her family. Angel knew that the flexibility she craved would only come in launching her own financial practice.

Angel has a strong accounting background; she earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting over 12 years ago. But she didn’t know how to start and run her own business. That’s when she decided to enroll in Universal Accounting’s training programs, and boy, did she enroll. She began with the Professional Bookkeeper Program and the Professional Professional Bookkeeper’s Guide to QuickBooks. Months later, she added the Professional Tax Preparer Program and the Universal Practice Builder program.

Now, just months after quitting her job, Angel has a total of 22 regular accounting clients and 23 tax clients, and she continues to get referrals. These are just a few of the benefits she enjoys after experiencing Universal’s quality training. She explains, “I don’t just do their books—I help them understand what is happening in their business so they can make better decisions. I hear all the time from my clients that they never had the help/interaction/analysis from their prior bookkeepers/accountants.”

Angel has been so swamped with tax season that she hasn’t yet been able to earn her professional certifications or begin the Universal Practice Builder program, which she plans on doing as soon as the tax deadline passes. Once she does, Angel anticipates that it won’t be long before she’s making more than she did in the corporate world and happily recommends Universal’s programs to like-minded individuals. What I remember considering when I was deciding to buy this course or not was the testimonials from the students with accounting degrees and the students in corporate accounting positions who consistently said that this course taught them the fundamental accounting systems and logic that is hidden in the background by software-based accounting systems. His insistence on ?long hand? accounting so that I would finish this course understanding the ?hows? and ?whys?. This was valuable to me whether I decided to start an accounting business OR (and still) if I decided to start an unrelated business (which I did). I still needed this knowledge. There were many other subtleties that factored into my decision but this was the major issue for me personally.
e. Access / Convenience ? I was able to educate myself fully on this product from their website. I called their salespeople for specific questions. I was not interested in financing but it gave me confidence that they believed in their product enough to offer it. I ordered it via phone and it would show up in its entirety in a few days. This was important because I had plans to consume this course at an accelerated rate (which I did). And there was always someone there who would pick up the phone and explain to me any concepts that I just couldn?t get from the DVDs. I didn?t need to because the course is extremely well done and understandable.
I prefer UA because of their professional DVD ?classroom experience? course that explains the fundamentals of accounting that is relevant to the small business owner in a systemized way. They have the experience. And they are the only people who do this in this way!

Although they had 30 years of combined accounting experience between them, Elizabeth and Roxee found themselves out of work a couple years ago. Scott Barhold has been performing magic nearly all of his life. He started with simple tricks in front of family and friends when he was a boy, and even performed on stage after high school. Today, Barhold likes to start his Universal Accounting Client Generator Seminars with a magic trick, turning a balloon into a box of money showing the magic he can deliver to his accounting clients.

“Unlocking profit is no magic trick,” Barhold said. “Most people have not been trained to do it right.”

Barhold found Universal Accounting through an ad on Craigslist and attended a seminar in Daytona Beach, Florida in February of 2008. He was seeking new ideas and proven techniques to help grow his existing accounting business, called Business Resolutions. He left the seminar invigorated and finished the Universal Practice Builder (UPB) program, a self-paced workshop consisting of eight DVDs, in just one weekend. Next he took the UPB Live seminar, an in-person weekend workshop by Universal Accounting, which energized him even more.

“Participating in the UPB Live was like playing in the Super Bowl, versus watching it,” he said. Barhold said before he found out about Universal Accounting, he had been losing clients. Now, after using the information learned at the UPB and UPB Live Workshops, his closing rate is about 28 percent.

“They taught me a different way to close a deal,” he said. He explained that in his urgency to find clients before attending the Universal Accounting Seminar, he was dramatically reducing his rates, accepting payment after the work was done, and practically begging people to have him do the books. “I was in front of the wrong people and was doing a lot of work for nothing. Now I have people calling me, telling me, `I’m a friend of so-and-so and I need you to help me like you’ve helped them.'”

The first customer Barhold was able to help after completing the program was a company that had been very unhappy with their accountant. “They were paying late fees, couldn’t get the information they wanted, or even visits from their accountant,” he said. Barhold explained that with the knowledge he had gained through the Universal Accounting programs, he was able to sign this new client in one meeting.

“Universal Accounting taught me how to relate my knowledge of accounting to the things that are meaningful to small business owners,” he said. “It’s not a pitch; it’s explaining how I can help them.”

In 2008, Barhold set a revenue goal for Business Resolutions of $72,000. “If I didn’t make my revenue goal,” he said, “I was going back to my old job.” Barhold was able to achieve his revenue goal two months early, and ultimately exceeded it by more than $15,000.

Business Resolutions is on track to make $97,000 in revenue in 2009, during an economic slowdown, when many companies have been struggling to stay in business. For 2010, Barhold’s revenue goal is $125,000 and to hire two data entry clerks and bookkeepers. To help him meet these revenue and staffing goals, Barhold plans to host six-to-eight Universal Accounting Client Generator Seminars.

I had completed several accounting college courses but I found that they did not adequately prepare me for the day to day real life challenges of a bookkeeper. Since attending this course I have had no trouble working as a full charge bookkeeper/accountant for several businesses on a contract or temporary basis. When Mike Kalous was laid-off in February 2009 from the Colorado construction company he was working at, he was naturally nervous. After unsuccessful job searches for comparable comptroller jobs within a couple hours drive, panic set in.

“I was really sweating it,” he said. “I was looking at possibly commuting to Denver, (more than a four-hour drive) and thinking we might have to sell the house and start renting,” he said.

In March, Kalous did some research online and found Universal Accounting. He ordered the Professional Bookkeeping and Quickbooks course of DVDs immediately.

Within a short time period, he used the tips he learned from the workshop DVDs, talked to two people, and secured three clients for his new company, Valley Vista Business Services.

“I was getting my car worked on, and I asked the owner, ‘Who does your accounting?'” Not only was he able to sign him on, but also the man’s wife. The third client was a friend of Kalous.

Since then, Kalous has been adding at least two clients a month. On one November day alone, he added three; two through referrals and one acquaintance.

In May, Kalous, encouraged by his success, took Universal Accounting’s Practice Builder Live Workshop, and then enrolled in the Client Generator Program from June to September. The Client Generator is a 90-day intensive program that combines the power of Universal Accounting’s Master Coaching, marketing products, and marketing coordinators, where Universal Accounting actually finds clients for you.

He did confess, that because of the cost, he and his wife were a little hesitant, but Kalous had reminded her of the success of the other programs.

“I definitely would not be where I am today without the Client Generator Program. It is a fantastic program and I highly recommend it,” he said.

This year Kalous’ goal was to obtain 11 new clients, which he met in September, and by the end of the year, he expects to hire his first employee.

“My previous job I was the assistant comptroller making about $72,000, and I thought I might make two-thirds of that by myself,” he said. However, after participating in the client-builder program, he and his coach, set Kalous’ long term goal as making a six-figure income.

“My long term goal is much larger than I had imagined when I started my business,” he said. “But now it is attainable in 2010.”

Kalous’ success has been recognized by Universal Accounting and he recently spoke at a UPB Live Conference where one of the students asked him if he was offered a job as a comptroller, making more than $100,000, if he would take it.

“I said, ‘No way would I take that job; things are much better through Universal Accounting.'” Kalous went on to say that he won’t go back to work for somebody else. He explained that he might lose a couple of clients here and there, but he will never lose his income again.

Four years ago, Shannon Beck was working long and stressful hours as a headhunter – recruiting CPA’s, Controllers and Bookkeepers for Robert Half International. He spent a great deal of his time in traffic and rarely saw his family. Because of the increased stress, lack of sleep, long hours, and on-the-go eating habits, his doctor told him that if he continued to live this way he would die by the age of 40.

Becks’ wife, Tina, had opened her own bookkeeping firm, Beck Accounting Services, in October 2004 and had turned to Universal Accounting to help her run her business more successfully. After seeing the growth his wife had gained from Universal Accounting, Beck saw an opportunity to help his wife grow her business, and recognized that he would have more time to spend with his family. Beck took a chance and joined her, after consulting with Universal Accounting’s management.

“The main reason was I never saw my family,” he said. On June 1, 2005 Beck left his corporate job to become an entrepreneur with his wife. He spent a great deal of his time working on the sales and marketing side of their business, helping his wife bring in several new clients. Within 5 months, they made more money than he had earned at his previous job.

Despite taking accounting classes at BYU, Beck also graduated from Universal Accounting as a Certified Professional Bookkeeper. “It helped me to really understand how to be an accountant,” Beck said, explaining that the several college classes and experience as a finance manager, didn’t give him all the knowledge he needed, or the support. Beck continued to train to be a full-service accountant, and again chose to enroll in the Universal Accounting Practice Builder Workshop.

“It’s a fantastic tool,” Beck said. “It gave us the knowledge and tools to run and operate an accounting firm for small and medium sized businesses.” He testified that the program not only showed them how to get the company, now called Professional Accounting Solutions, up and going, but how to organize and run it. “After five years, Universal Accounting is still working with us today,” he said. As past students they can still ask questions and get help from the company at any time.

As for his health, Beck says there are no problems, plus the family is making more money and spending more time together. They bought a new home in Highland, UT about two and a half years ago, they added additional services to their business, and are now living the American Dream! “It’s been great for our family,” he said. “We get to do what we want more often.”

Heather Weiler had been working part-time for seven years as a bookkeeper for a graphic design firm when she decided it was time to take charge of her career. She wanted to run a bookkeeping practice from her home that would enable her to enjoy greater flexibility, spend more time with family and increase her income. But because her experience was in managing books for one industry, she decided more training was in order; she turned to Universal Accounting Center (UAC) for help.

About a year ago I was working as a business broker and I came across a bookkeeping business for sale that seemed to offer steady revenue, good profits and the opportunity for growth that I was looking to get into myself so I could transition out of brokering, which I didn’t really enjoy. In 1984, Sandy Rockwell started her first business with her husband. This began her nearly twenty years’ experience as a business owner. However, when her father-in-law became ill, she decided to sell everything in order to take care of him. After he passed away, she reentered the traditional workforce as an administrative assistant, but when the recession hit in 2008, she was laid off. It was then that Sandy put her business knowledge to use and launched her own bookkeeping practice. While Sandy had achieved a basic mastery of accounting and bookkeeping over the years, she knew that in order to become truly successful, she would need to update her training and acquire certification demonstrating her expertise. For that, she turned to Universal Accounting Center.

Sandy completed the Professional Bookkeeper and the Professional Professional Bookkeeper’s Guide to QuickBooks programs and obtained the designations for each. She says, “I enjoy having the credentials after my name which gives me immediate creditability. I have a better understanding of accounting even after doing my own books for years. Matt Remuzzi had been working as a business broker when he decided that he could no longer tolerate the roller-coaster income. A self-made entrepreneur since 2000, he couldn’t imagine working for anyone other than himself. But he needed a change.

The four-week course at Universal Accounting was terrific. I have spent the past two years searching for just the right idea for a home based business. The business for me would have to provide a service of real value. I was looking for something interesting. something that would be relatively easy to start and not require a lot of capital. I was looking for a business that could start small and gradually be expanded. A business that could be further developed with additional training and experience. This is just the thing I was looking for.
