Start a New Habit

upswing2While many like to argue, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, the truth is anyone can choose to start a positive and healthy habit today.  While it may require self-discipline and drive, we can alter the course of our lives simply by making new choices leading to better outcomes.

In a recent Entrepreneur.com article, author and entrepreneur James Clear shares “5 Steps to Building a New Habit.”  Here we share the first three of those steps:

  1. Start with an incredibly small habit.  Willpower is not something that can be activated upon command.  As Clear explains, “Research shows that willpower is like a muscle.  It gets fatigued as you use it throughout the day.  Another way to think of this is that your motivation ebbs and flows.  It rises and falls.”  This stands to reason that if you can exercise your willpower with a small habit, you can build to bigger habits as that willpower gains strength.
  2. Increase your habit in very small ways.  Clear demonstrated this concept well in his article on the power of one percent.  Small, incremental increases (and decreases, should we choose) can have a profound impact.  The aggregation of marginal gains can be seen in both our personal and professional lives.  Jim Rohn said, “Success is a few simple disciplines, practiced every day; while failure is simply a few errors in judgment, repeated every day.”
  3. As you build up, break habits into chunks.  It can be difficult to tackle a bigger habit at one time.  Clear suggests breaking a larger habit into smaller, more manageable habits.  For example, if you want to exercise for 30 minutes a day, perhaps you can begin by excising 15 minutes, twice a day.  Once your willpower and stamina improve, you can perform those two habits back to back, finally making that bigger habit a part of your daily routine.

It’s important that we continually seek to improve our lives, and that can be accomplished by replacing poor habits with good ones.  Deciding that you will make the change is just the first step.  Following that choice with these three steps can ensure that you’re on your way to an improved life based on positive and healthy habits.

Starting Your Own Bookkeeping Service is Achievable, Profitable, and Easy (A.P.E.)

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.  Or should we say A.P.E..

Many imagine a potential startup as a difficult venture, one requiring more know-how, gumption, and drive than they may have.

Does that sound like you?  Are you worried that your dream of becoming self-employed and enjoying an improved lifestyle with increased earnings is too good to be true, or maybe not a good fit for you?  If so, it’s time you realized that starting your own bookkeeping practice is Achievable, Profitable, and Easy.  Don’t believe us?  Read on to find out just how true it is.

Achievable

You don’t need a four-year degree to do someone’s accounting.  In fact, many individuals who train at a university don’t learn the practical, day-to-day accounting functions required by many businesses.  That’s why the Professional Bookkeeper (PB) course is such a popular program that changes countless lives every year.  In just 60 hours, and with less money than you would probably spend on your summer vacation, you can learn all you need to know to launch your own bookkeeping practice: from starting a business’s books from scratch, to helping owners increase their profitability, to marketing your valuable services.  YOU can do this!

Testimonial: “This course is definitely NOT just an introductory course, although it is wonderful even for beginners. It is a comprehensive accounting and bookkeeping course that truly taught me everything I would need to know to start my own accounting business, and gain clients with confidence.” –J. Young

Profitable

We have a simple equation that will help you calculate how many clients you need to quit your day job and enjoy an improved lifestyle. Most clients bring in an average of $300 per month.  With 20 clients you’ll be earning $6000 per month, and with 25 clients you’ll be earning $7500.  That’s $72,000 to $90,000 per year.  How much are you earning right now?  How many clients would it take to replace that full-time income with contract accounting?  Once you start your own bookkeeping service, you determine your income by deciding how many clients you wish to serve.

Testimonial: “As an average for each client I am making about $30 – $50 an hour, I’ve been able to quit my full-time job. Thanks again to everyone at Universal Accounting Center! It has created for me a brighter outlook financially, as well as more free time in my personal life. And, I didn’t have to go to college for years and pay thousands of dollars for an education.”—S. Thomas

Easy

Whether you’re new to accounting or a seasoned accountant, the Professional Bookkeeper course will easily lead you through all the concepts necessary to run your own practice.  Now only that, but the Professional Bookkeeper’s hands-on approach will enable you to become confident in your ability to perform all necessary accounting functions.

Testimonial: This course has literally changed my life. When I started I hardly knew the difference between a debit and a credit. Now I have the confidence to tackle almost any type of business and do their books.—A. Moody

5 Simple Tips to End Procrastination

procrastinateWe’ve all procrastinated at one time or another.  And while for some, procrastination may represent a brief lapse in productivity, others are plagued with chronic procrastination that threatens their livelihood and business.  Wherever you may be on the spectrum, it’s important to recognize your tendency to procrastinate and respond promptly, especially now that tax season is upon us.

The following five steps will help anyone, regardless of the severity of their procrastination problem:

1. Determine the holdup. Whether you’re addicted to the adrenaline that comes from waiting until the last minute, you believe you work better under pressure, or you’re lacking the experience and expertise to complete a particular task, you’ll be unable to resolve your procrastination issues until you know what’s causing them.  And don’t fool yourself.  There may be one reason you’re procrastinating Task #1 and a completely different reason you’re procrastinating Task #2.  Take the time to determine exactly what’s holding your back.

2. Fake it ‘til you make it. Sometimes there’s no way around a tiresome task than to get busy and do it, even when every part of you is resisting.  Often, the only way to gain the momentum necessary to tackle these unpleasant tasks is by putting one foot in front of the other until it’s completed.

3. Tackle the most formidable tasks first. The tasks you procrastinate are generally the most unpleasant.  You’ll be doing yourself a huge favor if you tackle those tasks first.  You know what they say: swallow a toad in the morning and you will encounter nothing more disgusting the rest of the day.   When you complete these tasks first thing, you’ll find yourself recharged and ready to tackle the remainder of your day with ease.

4. Break bigger tasks into smaller, more manageable ones. Those overwhelming projects are best handled bit by bit.  Break those large projects into smaller tasks that can be handled on a daily basis.  Schedule these smaller tasks into your day so that you are able to better inch towards project completion.

5. When feasible, delegate or outsource. You don’t have to do everything yourself, especially when it makes more sense to delegate the task to an employee or outsource it to someone who’s more qualified for the job.  Whether it be remodeling your office or doing payroll, it’s important that you evaluate how much it will cost you (in time) to complete yourself versus having someone else do it for you.

Luckily, procrastination is curable.  With a little self reflection and a few action steps you can move forward into greater productivity and profitability.  These 5 steps should get you started.

Two Major Keys To Success In Accounting

Universal Structured Power Coaching, Coach FeedbackAs you pursue your career in accounting, there are so many paths to take. You may want to own your own firm one day. Find a promotion. Land a big raise. Regardless of your goals, there are some basic keys to your success in the field of accounting, and every single successful accountant can boast of these characteristics. You can do well with one or the other, but only together do they cooperate for success and freedom in your accounting future.

First you should take some time to address where you are now. Are you a beginner? Experienced? Expert? What are your future goals in your career of accounting? Are these goals available to you at the current time or will you need a big change to achieve your goals? You need some clarity for what you want before you can fully develop these traits. Then when you’re ready you can begin working on these two critical keys to success in accounting.

Competence

The primary key to success in accounting is of course competence. You must be good at your job. You need to be able to work efficiently, meet deadlines, think critically, and make effective decisions for your company or clients. You can begin working on your competence by reviewing your strengths and weaknesses in your current accounting position. Identify ways to strengthen your weaknesses and to display your strengths. Universal Accounting courses are available to bolster your accounting skills to maximize profits for yourself and your clients.

Confidence

This trait is by far the most lacking in the business of accounting. Most accountants believe that their work will do the talking, and that confidence is a trait for salesmen and athletes. If you do your job right you’ll have success right? Maybe. But the only way to truly guarantee success in your accounting career is to pair competence with confidence. Display your skills and speak up. Share your confidence with your superiors and clients. Believe that you can find creative solutions to any accounting problem, and that any endeavor you assume will be successful. Confidence transforms a mediocre accountant to a star accountant. Clients and firms will be attracted to your confidence and find more value in your efforts.

Are you lacking in competence? Feeling less-than-confident? Universal Accounting School is here to help. We offer courses and materials to help you flesh out both traits in your accounting life. You can become any accountant you want – we can make you a successful one.  Now is the time to become a Profit & Growth Expert and then a successful Accountrepreneur.
