Making a Career Comeback

career-comeback5 Tips on Wowing Prospective Employers

Whether you’ve been raising a family, earning a degree, or were the victim of recession layoffs, planning a career comeback can be daunting.  You may worry that your time away has hindered your chances for finding solid employment.  It doesn’t have to!

As you prepare to get your career on track, consider these 5 tips on wowing prospective employers.

1. Determine what you want. Don’t plow forward until you have decided the direction you want your career to go.  When you haphazardly push your career forward, you wind up with a haphazard career.  While the responsibility of earning a living may loom large, it doesn’t have to prevent you from getting on a desirable career path.  Sit back and determine where you’d most like to be in your career before you start the job hunt.

2. Develop new skills. Some people are concerned that this step will take too much time from their efforts in finding a new job.  While you may have to find a transitional job to pay the bills while you receive necessary training, you don’t have to spend years earning professional certification.  In some cases, one or two college classes will be enough to revamp your skills, while in other cases a reputable bookkeeping program may be what you need.

3. Revamp your resume. Once you know where you are going and are confident that you possess the skills necessary, it’s time to revamp your resume.  Highlight your strengths while considering the employers who will review it.  What are they most interested in, and have you made it easy for them to find it on your resume?

4. Build your network. The best way to find work opportunities is through networking.  If you’ve been out of the loop for awhile, chances are you will need to rebuild your network.  Consider family, friends, businesses you frequent, and other contacts who could expose you to potential jobs.  Spread the word, and you’ll soon discover just how valuable a professional network can be.

5. Be flexible. Sometimes we become too narrow-minded when looking for a job.  Is it absolutely necessary for you to find full-time employment?  Would your career benefit more from a part-time position?  Or, perhaps, you could consider freelance work for awhile?  Approaching your career with an open mind may enable you to discover possibilities you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

Consider Self-Employment

As you ponder your options for reentering the job market, you may also want to consider the possibility of self-employment.  Is it time to launch your own business in order to enjoy greater flexibility and higher earnings?

Changing Jobs in the Accounting Field

successful business womanIt’s happened to the best of us.  We launch our careers and then decide that we’re unsatisfied performing the tasks in our current occupations.  Perhaps you began your accounting career with the idea that you would move up or switch to a job more compatible with your interests and goals.

Whether you’ve been in your current job for ages and need a change, or if you’re just interested in the opportunities available, accounting is a wide field that offers many options.  From controller to tax manager, from senior accountant to senior analyst, from credit manager to bookkeeper, the job possibilities are endless, so there’s no reason to feel gridlocked in your accounting career.  But as you consider a change, remember the following Do’s and Don’ts:

1.   Don’t worry if the thought of changing careers makes you nervous.  Change of any kind, especially in a career, makes most people nervous.  It’s perfectly normal and shouldn’t scare you away from accomplishing what you desire.  Taking it slow and creating a plan will help ward off any fear you might be experiencing.

2.   Don’t get discouraged.  It may take awhile to 1) discover what you really want, and 2) find that perfect job for you.  Recognize that changing jobs will require time and patience.

3.   Don’t rule out staffing agencies.  Sometimes you have to date a few employers and jobs before you commit to just one.  There are staffing agencies that specialize in accounting and by taking a few months to test drive employers and occupations you’ll get a good idea of which might be best for you while simultaneously getting your foot in the door.

4. Do take the time to research and consider all the possibilities.  Take the time to consider your interests, your objectives, and your ultimate career goals.  Do the research necessary to determine which job and employer will be right for you.  While you’re at it, find a mentor in the same position who could give you valuable tips.

5.   Do remember your transferable skills and networking contacts.  Because you’re moving from one accounting job to another, recognize that your transferable skills are extremely valuable.  Update your resume so that it targets your desired occupation while highlighting those transferable skills.  Also refer to your contact list to 1) aid in helping you determine which occupation is for you, 2) discover job opportunities you may not have heard about otherwise and 3) win an advantage on a job you’re interested in.

6.   Do get training that will help you advance. Often you’ll have a better shot at getting a job if you’ve had advanced training.  For example, enrolling in UAC’s Professional Bookkeeper Program could give you the advantage in finding just the job you want.  It will bolster your resume and give you a talking point in those crucial interviews.

Whichever occupation you choose in the accounting field, the important thing is that you find the right one for you.  In following this list of Do’s and Don’ts you will have a better chance of doing just that.

Make 2015 a Stellar Year!

new-year-prepYour aspirations will continue to reside in your future unless you do something about them, today!  You can take action to start your own bookkeeping service by enrolling in the Professional Bookkeeper Program.  You could be finished in less than 60 days and earn certification that will show prospective clients that you have the expertise necessary to handle all their accounting needs.

One Simple Course

This course is designed to make you a Profit Expert.  What’s a Profit Expert?  A financial professional who does more than balance books, but also informs clients how to increase their business’s profitability.  They are proactive accountants who help their clients make informed business decisions aimed at improving a company’s fiscal health.

In addition to becoming a Profit Expert, the Professional Bookkeeper Program will teach you all you need to know to start and manage a business’s books.  Specifically you will learn how to perform small-business accounting tasks.  This is remarkable because most accounting programs prepare their graduates to perform corporate accounting; however, more than 80% of accounting opportunities are not with large corporations but small businesses.

There are more than enough local businesses with which to build your client base. They could use someone specialized in those skills that satisfy their unique needs.

In addition to the reasons noted above, there are many more that detail why a bookkeeping service makes so much sense. Here’s a list of some of those reasons:

  • Every business is required by law to keep books
  • You can earn a good living (the average client will bring in about $300 per month)
  • It’s an inexpensive business to start (you probably have most of what is required right now)
  • No expensive equipment is required
  • You can make money doing what you enjoy
  • You can work anytime, any place
  • Rented office space is not required
  • Inventory is not required

A bookkeeping service is one of the easiest to begin.  And to wrap up your training, we will also teach you how to market your new and unique skills.  You’ll not only know how to start and manage a company’s books from scratch but also how to acquire those qualified clients that will appreciate your service offerings.

In less than a couple months you could be ready to start your own accounting practice.  Why not celebrate the New Year early by enrolling in a program that will change the course of your future, today?

Call Universal now at 1-800-833-7908 to give yourself one last gift: a stellar new year!
