When I was given the opportunity to become president of Universal Accounting Center there were a few words of advice I received from Allen Bostrom, the then-retiring president. He highly encouraged me to attend conference events each and every year, the more the better. He stressed that I can't run the business in a vacuum and that I needed to be aware of current trends and in contact with my peers. He explained at the conferences I'd hear from the experts and learn from the vendors the new and exciting things in the profession.

He wasn't wrong.

Taking the time to step aside from the business, and the day-to-day routine to work ON the company has helped me realize things I wouldn't have otherwise.
