State of Texas: Tax, Accounting & Demographic Information

Compared to many states in the country, Texas is a fairly tax-friendly state. In fact, cities, counties, and even school districts collect property taxes rather than the state so that the revenue is used specifically for local needs. County districts set and appraise real estate taxes rather than the city. The state itself stands apart by not even having a state income tax. Its inheritance tax was repealed in 2015, so that’s no longer taxable either.

In San Antonio, property tax rates consist of two components which are Maintenance and Operations as well as Debt Services. Together, this created a 55.827 cent per 100 taxable value rate for the 2022 tax year. This number does fluctuate from year to year.  Sales tax in San Antonio is 8.25%. This is broken down with 6.25% going to the state, 1% to the City, .125% to the Ready to Work Program, .125% to Pre-K initiative, .250 to Advanced Transportation District, and .5% to the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

State sales tax is 6.25%, but local taxes can be added to the final percentage. Unlike many states, Texas doesn’t have a personal property tax unless the property is used for business. However, there are plenty of property tax exemptions. The state does impose a cigarette tax, hotel tax, and gas tax.

On a federal level, we will be seeing a change in standard deductions. Deductions will increase to $12,950 for single filers, an increase of $400 from previous years. For joint filers, this number is rising to $25,900, which is an increase of $800. Other changes include no longer having to itemize charitable donations to claim them on your tax return. Tax rates continue to remain the same, but tax brackets have been adjusted to account for inflation.
