Are You a Great Boss?

Managing employees isn’t always easy.  And when you’re busy juggling clients, accounting tasks, financial management and the marketing for new business, acting as a great boss can slide to the bottom of one’s priority list.  It can help to know what makes a boss exceptional—that way you can focus on those functions that will make employment at your business a positive experience for all the members of your staff while increasing your practice’s productivity and morale.

In a recent BNET.com article written by columnist Jeff Haden, “The 5 Essential Functions of a Great Boss” are detailed, of which we share three here:

1. Address problems immediately.  Letting problems fester, however small they may be, erodes morale as well as employee confidence in your ability to manage.  Recognize, address and resolve problems as quickly as possible.

2. Rescue struggling employees.  Occasionally you will have a member of your staff slip and fall from grace.  While they may put forth their best efforts to recover from the misstep, it can be difficult for their coworkers to fully accept them back into the fold.  That’s where you step in.  A gesture of encouragement and approval from the boss can be all it takes to rescue one of these struggling employees.

3. Develop every employee. As Haden explains, “If your sole focus is on hitting targets, achieving results, and accomplishing concrete goals, your leadership cart is well before the horse. Without great employees, no amount of focus on goals and targets will pay off. Employees can only achieve what they are capable of achieving, so it’s your job to help every employee become capable of achieving more.”

Haden goes on to explain that it’s a manager’s job to ensure that their employees receive the training opportunities they need to best serve and advance in their current positions.

Acting as a great boss can be more motivational to your staff than even the cheesiest quote or promotional plaque.  As you show a genuine interest in your employees’ work experience at your practice by fulfilling these functions, you’ll find their loyalty, commitment and performance improves.
