What other professions can claim to be as stable or consistent as accounting and bookkeeping? Is the definition of a debit or credit going to change today after being used for more than 500 years?

Since the dawn of time accounting was used in the simplest of forms, and has been referred to as the second oldest profession. From the late 1400’s accounting has been based on the principles of debits, credits and double-entry accounting. Although originally written in Latin, the books of the father of accounting, Fra Luca Pacioli, could be used today to teach bookkeeping.

“There are three things needed by any one who wishes to carry on business carefully. The most important of these is cash or any equivalent, the second thing is to be a good bookkeeper and ready mathematician, the third and last thing is to arrange all the transactions in such a systematic way that one may understand each one of them at a glance.”

Fra Luca Pacioli
Summa De Arithmetica
1494

One hundred percent of businesses need accurate accounting, and to ensure that it is done the government steps in and requires that it be completed for taxes. An example of this trend is stated in the United States Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook:

“Demand for full-charge bookkeepers is expected to increase as they are called upon to do much of the work of accountants. Those with several years of accounting or bookkeeper certification will have the best job prospects.”
